Description:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the proper and timely recording of financial transactions in the general ledger in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Maui Health System policies and internal control standards. Responsibilities include analyzing account transactions, preparing complex account reconciliations, resolving reconciling items, and preparing accounting statements and reports. Provides training for systems processes and procedures for accounting team members. Facilitates productivity, system and procedural changes to streamline processes and increase productivity. Plans, coordinates and resolves accounting matters with other accounting team members and departments. Works independently and provides guidance to Accounting team and other departments. Develops solutions to accounting problems of moderate scope and complexity. Works under the direction of Accounting Manager.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Ensures proper and timely recording of financial transactions in the general ledger in accordance with GAAP, Maui Health System policies and internal control standards.

  • Proactively participates in month end close activities.

  • Proactively participates in analysis of balance sheet, income statement and changes in financial position.

  • Serves as an expert resource to the accounting team and other departments.

  • Monitors work for proper internal controls and SOX requirements and recommends improvements.

  • Assists with audit requirements and is responsible for information requests.

  • Performs special projects of moderate to complex scope.

  • Basic Qualifications:

    Experience

  • Minimum four (4) years of financial data collection, processing, reporting, and analysis experience or related equivalent education.

  • Education

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, related field OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.

  • Additional Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and accounting procedures.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of research, analysis, and laws as related to area of responsibility.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in conflict resolution, results orientation, decision making, customer service, influence, negotiation, interpersonal relations, oral communication, problem solving, analytical, quality management, systems thinking, teamwork, written communication, organizational skills, adaptability, creativity/innovation, and team building.

  • Excellent spreadsheet (Excel) skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing and database PC applications.

  • Knowledge and ability to translate data into accurate financial and management reports.

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, and meet deadlines.

  • Flexibility to perform a variety of detailed accounting functions and meet established deadlines.


  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Health care or managed care experience

  • Master's degree in business administration with concentration in accounting.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) by the Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs

  • Knowledge of Kaiser Permanente systems and organization.
