Job Summary:


The primary sponsors of the BSCU are KPNC Graduate Medical Education (GME), Community Health (CH), and the Permanente Medical Group (TPMG). Our team also supports several industry-funded projects. We work on a wide spectrum of clinical areas - basically, from head to toe (e.g., adult family medicine, pediatrics, infectious disease, podiatry, social determinants of health, ophthalmology, women’s health).


The ideal candidate for this position will co-lead the BSCU Analytic Programming team of programmers/analysts focused on providing high-quality programming/biostatistical collaborations with our sponsors. To support the continued growth of the BSCU Analytic Programming team, this position will serve alongside two other supervisors and under the Director of BSCU Analytic Programming Team.


Our team collaborates with our clients to: a) design studies and analytical plans, b) perform feasibility analyses and power/sample size calculations, c) collect, manage, analyze data, and interpret results, d) serve as co-authors/presenters on research outcomes (peer-reviewed papers, conference presentations). This supervisor is expected to work closely with TPMG or CH principal/co-investigators, project managers at various GME residency/fellowship programs, BSCU programmers/analysts, and two other BSCU teams: Scientific Research Management and Strategic Program Operations teams. 

This position will be part of the BSCU and will co-lead the BSCU Analytic Programming team of programmers/analysts with two other supervisors providing: a) expert data and analytic consultation, b) technical guidance to the programmers/analysts, c) on-going support to the leadership and sponsors, and d) support in talent search and training newhires.This position also collaborates with fellow supervisors/managers in setting up guidelines/procedures to ensure that the BSCU achieve its mission ‘developing clinician-led scientific research through innovative methods and collaborative partnerships.’ 


This supervisory level employee is primarily responsible for driving strategic data-informed decisions, leading data and information collection on targeted variables in an established systemic fashion, and leading data preparation for analytic efforts.
This position supervises the execution of creative data analytic approaches leading to actionable outcomes, supervises the development, implementation, and automation of business and reporting solutions, leads data analysis interpretation, and leads the development of analytics and/or statistical models enabling informed business decisions.



Essential Responsibilities:

  • Supervises day-to-day activities of designated work team or unit by overseeing the execution of tactical action items; ensuring all policies and procedures are followed; delegating tasks to meet short term deliverables; overseeing the completion of work assignments; aligning team efforts and measuring progress in achieving results; identifying and recommending improvement opportunities; and removing obstacles that impact performance.

  • Drives strategic data-informed decisions by consulting with senior-level clients to identify and clarify key business needs; leading the development of outcomes and process measures; leading the translation of business requirements; determining data/information needs and data collection methods; leading the development of analysis plans; reviewing the impact of business decisions on clients, customers, and/or members; working with clients and staff to identify opportunities and methods to improve efficiencies with analysis; ensuring end-users are supported and trained; and leading documentation of processes and deliverables.

  • Leads data and information collection on targeted variables in an established systematic fashion by reviewing data sources; providing guidance regarding data collection methods and analysis; leading routine data refresh and update; leading the development and/or delivery of tools for electronic data collection; ensuring users are trained and supported; and leading documentation.

  • Leads data preparation for analytic efforts by integrating and consolidating data; ensuring data quality and accuracy; recommending process improvements and system changes to enhance overall quality of the data; resolving or escalating issues to ensure remediation as appropriate; and reviewing final data set(s) for analysis.

  • Supervises the execution of creative data analytic approaches leading to actionable outcomes by providing guidance on data design and analysis; reviewing metrics to be analyzed; defining, calculating, and validating algorithms; reviewing results of analyses; and serving as a point of escalation and technical support for descriptive, correlational, inferential, and/or predictive analyses.

  • Supervises the development, implementation, and automation of business and reporting solutions by working with stakeholders to ensure their design, planning, and implementation needs are being met while ensuring consistency and coherency; reviewing results; ensuring data reports, visualizations, and/or interactive Business Intelligence (BI) reports meet established standards; reporting to stakeholders on key findings; and leading the preparation of documentation.

  • Leads data analysis interpretation by reviewing findings and their application to contextual settings; reviewing insights, reports, and presentations; providing guidance and coaching to ensure a compelling story for stakeholders and to enable and influence decision making; and sharing insights with internal and/or external audiences.

  • Leads the development of analytical and/or statistical models enabling informed business decisions by determining data and analytical requirements; creating and reviewing models leading to actionable insights; and testing, refining, and validating models.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelors degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Social/Physical/Life Science, Business, or related field.

  • Minimum five (5) years progressive corporate, non-profit, or consulting experience, including Minimum three (3) years in data analytics or directly related field. Additional equivalent work experience in a directly related field may be substituted for the degree requirement.

  • Minimum two (2) years experience in a leadership role with or without direct reports.

  • A Master’s degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, or statistics is strongly preferred.
