Job Summary:
This position operates within the overall context of the enterprise to ensure Kaiser Permanente is positioned to be the leader in the delivery of healthcare services.
The SVP, Ambulatory Care/CAO position serves as the organization’s senior care delivery leader accountable for ambulatory and virtual care delivery in the markets outside of California. The SVP, Ambulatory Care/CAO is responsible for driving financial results and operating performance for National Ambulatory Operations while partnering and cross-collaborating with the markets to transform ambulatory care delivery while improving quality and reducing cost.
This position will be accountable for organizing ambulatory services in the participating markets, ensuring market ambulatory services are aligned with enterprise strategy and goals, and building capabilities and capacity to drive performance in access, service, quality and affordability across all participating markets. This role includes direct reporting of all clinical leaders and KFH/HP care teams that provide and support clinical care, inclusive of primary care and specialty clinic operations, ambulatory operations, advanced urgent care, urgent care, ambulatory surgery centers, laboratory services, imaging services, staffing offices, OT, PT, and ST services, mental health, and clinical call centers.
The SVP, Ambulatory Care/CAO will partner and collaborate with the Medical Foundation and non-Medical Foundation markets to ensure the overall success of National Ambulatory Operations and the related goals and objectives.
In addition to the above, this role may continue to support additional Kaiser Permanente health plan operations.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Accountable for Ambulatory systems processes and performance.
- Responsible for successfully leading Ambulatory Urgent Care/Urgent Care, Ambulatory Surgery Center, Lab, Imaging, Urgent Care, Staffing, Therapies, Mental Health, and Clinical Call Centers.
- Accountable for the leadership and oversight of National Ambulatory Operations (NAO), driving operational excellence through the creation of multi-year ambulatory care strategies.
- Accountable for the total cost of care, access, quality and service relating to ambulatory care services in markets outside of California, deploying resources to support the delivery of high quality, affordable care.
- Supports the achievement of P&L and affordability goals for the markets.
- Collaborates to achieve market share and growth objectives.
- Leads National Ambulatory Operations, evolving the enterprise model of care to ensure standardization and reduction of variation, development of core capabilities and infrastructure to leverage enterprise scale to improve market performance.
- Drives the innovation strategy including new clinical and ambulatory models to position National Ambulatory Operations, participating markets, and the broader enterprise as a national leader in ambulatory services.
- Embodies and emanates desired culture behaviors congruent with One KP and in alignment with the enterprise mission, vision, and goals.
- Leads by example through integrity, transparency, commitment to unparalleled levels of service, and dedication to active culture change.
- Partners with staff and clinicians to build alignment and continually seek out opportunities to improve overall care delivery in terms of cost and quality.
- Grasps the key business and operational drivers and cost levers to establish accountability within the respective leadership teams.
- Establishes sustainable and reliable mechanisms to ensure adherence to operating standards and guidelines.
- Effectively develops and leverages dashboard related metrics to ensure ambulatory operations achieve optimal levels of performance.
- Ensures alignment of National Ambulatory Operations with other Medical Foundation and non-Foundation Medical Groups for new operational infrastructure, policies, procedures, and processes.
- Assists in the recruitment, retention, and mentoring of team members to fulfill the roles, accountabilities, and performance improvement opportunities, and to support the overall enterprise succession plan.
- Supports the development of materials related to KFHP/H Board.
- Participates in relevant committee meetings, as appropriate.
- Effectively partners with participating PMGs, Labor, Community, and all local and program functions.
- Other activities as required.
- Minimum ten (10) years of experience working for a large, integrated delivery system of comparable size and complexity with large medical groups, ambulatory care networks, and acute care hospitals is required.
- Minimum seven (7) years of operational oversight experience, including running the administrative support for clinicians and medical office buildings is required.
- Bachelors Degree in Business, Health Administration or related field (flexible).

- Strategic planning implementation, programmatic expansion and operational plans experience is preferred.
- Organic and inorganic growth experience is preferred.
- Experience working with organized labor and handling union negotiations is preferred.

- Familiarity with KP integrated model, operations, and markets is strongly preferred.
- Experience developing performance metrics and maintaining accountability in key areas of member satisfaction, quality improvement, finance, and delivery system performance is strongly preferred.
- Masters Degree (MBA, MHA, or MPH or similar degree)
