Job Summary:

Directs daily operations and activities of assigned laboratory function(s) and ensures delivery of cost effective, quality services. Collaborates with pathologist, supervisors and manager on establishment of work and quality improvement priorities. Develops plans/projects to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness. Performs Medical Technologist duties as needed.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • Directs daily operations and activities of assigned laboratory function(s). Ensures delivery of cost effective quality services.

  • Assists in establishing work and quality improvement priorities. Plans staffing levels. Delegates responsibilities to other staff members.

  • Oversees periodic facility inspection. Emphasizes cleanliness, efficiency of operation, workflow, sanitation and good housekeeping methods in general.

  • Performs Medical Technologists duties as needed. .

  • May serve as General Supervisor as defined by CLIA 88 for High Complexity Testing. Is accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic support. Provides day to day technical oversight of personnel performing high complexity testing. Must be on-site to provide direct oversight when high complexity testing is performed by certain individuals. Monitors test analyses and specimen examination to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained. Fulfills certain responsibilities as delegated by the lab director or supervisor, including assuring that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications; ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning; providing orientation to all testing personnel; and annually evaluates and documents the technical performance of all testing personnel.

  • May serve as Technical Supervisor as defined by CLIA 88 for High Complexity Testing excluding Blood Bank. The technical supervisor is responsible for technical and scientific oversight. This person is not required to be on-site at all times, but must be available to provide consultation either on-site, by telephone, or electronically. In addition, the technical supervisor selects test methodology appropriate for the clinical use of the test menu; verifies test procedures performed and establishes the laboratorys performance criteria, including accuracy and precision of each test and test system; 6. enrolls laboratory in an approved PT program commensurate with services offered; establishes a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed and establishes the parameter for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensures that these levels are maintained throughout the testing process; resolves technical problems and ensures remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications; 6. ensures patient test results are not reported until all corrective action has been taken and the test system is properly functioning; identifies training needs and ensures testing personnel receive regular in-service training; evaluates the competency of all testing personnel on an ongoing basis; and evaluates and documents performance of individuals responsible for testing at six months and twelve months in the first year of employment and yearly thereafter, unless test methodology or instrumentation changes, in which case, prior to reporting patient test results, the individuals performance must be reevaluated to include the use of the new test methodology or instrumentation.

  • Maintains and monitors facility. Emphasizes safety, customer service, efficient workflow, and regulatory compliance. Develops techniques to ensure effective, economical and efficient use of equipment, supplies, and facility.

  • Establishes collaborative working relationships with laboratory and regional departments. Represents laboratory as member of designated committees

  • Assists in preparation of budget. Monitors expenditures. Ensures compliance with budget. Promotes effective use of resources.

  • Hires, trains, supervises, counsels, disciplines, and terminates assigned staff.

  • Communicates goals, objectives, accountabilities, priorities, and authority parameters to assigned staff.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience


  • Minimum three (3) years of general laboratory experience.

Education

  • Bachelors degree in medical technology, OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
  • Must meet training or experience requirement(s) as required by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
License, Certification, Registration
  • Medical Technologist License (Hawaii) required at hire
Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in adaptability, decision making, customer service, influence, interpersonal relations, oral communication, problem solving, quality management, systems thinking, team building, teamwork, and written communication.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research writing experience.
  • Supervisory/lead or project management experience.
  • Pathology experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing, spreadsheet and database PC applications.
  • Masters degree in medical technology.
