This job exists to assist the supervisor and/or technical specialist in meeting the operational needs of the department by overseeing and coordinating operations of a work unit, using independent judgment within a defined scope. This includes all duties of the Medical Technologist and additional responsibilities requiring application of more specialized knowledge, responsibility and freedom to act. Holiday and weekend rotation may be required for this position.
- Performall the duties of a Medical Technologist.
- Overseeand coordinate operations in designated areas under direction of supervisor. Consult with technical service representative to resolve complex technical problems. Coordinate proficiency testing. Review and monitor Quality Control records; recommend action to be taken. Assure documentation of analytical corrective actions. Recommend improvements for performance and/or operations. Triage problems and refer to appropriate levels for decisions. Provide advanced support for problem solving. Manage supply inventories effectively, including problem follow-up or resolution and communication. Direct activities for non-routine tasks. Review reports in support of the technical specialist, supervisor and director. Provide a high level of experience and expertise.
- Develop and update procedures and policies. Under the direction of the supervisor or technical specialist, research, develop, write and update procedures and communications necessary for the implementation of new products, policies and procedures. Collaborate with supervisors and/or technical specialist regarding: Newest options/technical changes for equipment and methodologies. Optimal operation to effect quality patient care. Identification, implementation and evaluation of QA monitors and metrics.
- Effectively communicate to co-workers, technical specialist, supervisor, department director, clinicians and other members of the healthcare team; provide communication to all shifts. Involve staff in problem solving by coaching them through the steps and thought processes needed to logically resolve problems. Train and SUPPORT the development of staff and students helping them to learn to perform higher level tasks. Provide training and competency assessment. Meet on regular basis with supervisor to assess the effectiveness of the lead role.
- Three (3) years of recent clinical laboratory experience as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist, including at least one (1) year of experience in technical area of responsibility (e.g. Chemistry).
- Baccalaureate degree in Chemical, Physical or Biological Sciences.
- Medical Technologist Certificate from American Society for Clinical Pathologists OR American Medical Technologist Medical Technologist Certificate OR Medical Lab Scientist Certificate from American Society for Clinical Pathologists
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Working knowledge of the equipment related to section or project.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Prioritization and organization skills.
- Problem solving and decision making skills.
- Thorough knowledge of the technical section.
- Demonstrated verbal and written command of the English language adequate for providing training to laboratory and non-laboratory staff, for communicating specimen collecting and handling requirements and providing help and support to laboratory and other health care staff.
- Note: Staff certified by ASCP after 1/1/04 or AMT after 1/1/06 must recertify every 3 years.
- Three (3) or more years of experience in technical area of responsibility.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze situations to make operational decisions to meet clinical needs.
- Advanced computer knowledge.
- Demonstrated skills in organizing, prioritizing and problem solving.
